What day should I bring my child in for a free trial class?
The best days are Mondays and Wednesdays for the 4:30 PM class.

What time should we be there?
Arrive early at 4:00 PM. You will need to fill out a waiver form for them to participate.

Do I need to make an appointment for my child?
An appointment for a trial class is not required but advance notice is appreciated.

What should my child wear?
Have them dressed in comfortable play clothes.

Do they need to have a uniform to try a class?
A uniform is not necessary for the trial class. However, they will need one to continue their Judo training.

Are there any forms to fill out prior to attending a trial class?
No, all required forms are available at the dojo.

What day should I show up for my free trial class?
The best days for adults and kids over 13, are on Mondays and Wednesdays for the 6:00 PM class.

What time should I arrive?
Arrive early at 5:30 PM. You will need to fill out a waiver form to participate.

Do I need to make an appointment?
An appointment for a trial class is not required but advance notice is appreciated.

What should I wear?
Dress in comfortable workout clothes, preferably without zippers, snaps, or anything else that might damage the mats. Sweatpants or shorts are ideal.

Do I need to have a uniform to try a class?
A uniform is not necessary for the trial class. However, you will need one to continue your Judo training.

Are there any forms to fill out prior to attending?
No, all required forms to try a class are available at the dojo.

 

HOW TO START

What is the start-up fee?
1. The first cost would be a USJF membership card. It is $70 and valid for a year.
2. The second cost would be a Judo gi (uniform). The cost for this is approximately $60.
3. Third would be the monthly fee of $75.

What is USJF?
The United States Judo Federation (USJF) is a non-profit, tax-exempt and educational corporation dedicated to the teaching and promotion of Judo in the United States. The USJF was founded in 1953, and is the oldest and most reputable organization of judo in the United States. Portland Judo is an officially sanctioned USJF dojo.

How do I obtain a USJF membership?
We have the registration form at the dojo. Do not fill out forms or send payments online. Having our staff go over the application will insure that everything is done properly. We will also make sure to send all paperwork and payments directly to the national office for you.

Where do I purchase a Judo gi?
We have a full range of gis available at our dojo to try on and purchase. Buying a judogi online without trying one on can be risky. There is also a convenient Judo store 5 minutes away from our dojo. (add link)

How do I take care of my monthly dues?
All payments are done at the dojo. You can pay with cash, check, or credit card. We also offer a Autopay program where monthly dues can be collected from your credit card. Easy to stop at anytime.

How many classes can I attend per week?
The monthly fee covers unlimited judo classes.

How often should I train?
Most beginners attend 1-2 classes a week. There are a few passionate students who attend 3-4 classes a week.

 

PROMOTIONS

How do promotions work?
There is color belt system leading up to a black belt.

Are there any promotion fees?
Promotion fees are common in martial arts, however there is no promotion fees at Portland Judo. We consider it an honor for our dojo to be able to recognize you for your hard work. We also provide you with your new belt along with your certificate.

How long does it take to become a black belt?
For an adult attending 2 classes a week, it will take approximately 8 years to attain the rank of Shodan (first degree black belt). This information is given as a guideline only. Promotions are never requested in Judo.
